The Columbia Longboat
In this photo
the "Hewitt R. Jackson" heads north across the strait of Juan DeFuca towards
Canada to compete in the King of Spain's Cup Longboat regatta, which she
won. This boat was designed for the Grays Harbor Historic Seaport Authority.
It is a replica of an longboat from the 1790's. It is designed to match
the one that would have been used by the "Columbia" when she made her
fur trading expedition to the Northwest coast of North America. Two of
these boats were built and are used for educational purposes with the
local school district as well as sail training activities at the Seaport.
They are accurate historical replicas with the exception of fastening
technology and some laminated structural members.
